Songpeon is the moon-shaped rice cake that Koren enjoys specially on Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day celebrating for harvesting). To celebrate one of the biggest Korean holidays, Mannam Korean Cooking Class opened a class for Songpyeon. Ingredients and instructions are so simple to prepare and follow. :-) Everyone was so creative at decorating Songpyeon with new fashioned way and Here are some of the fantastic works. |
※ First is first. We should make a dough first. It's simple.
Basic (white) dough
- 2 cups of frozen rice powder, completely thawed to room temperature
- 4 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon (or 2 if needed) boiling hot water
To make colorful doughs like in the picrues, we added mugwort power(for green color), kabocha(for yellow color), Baek-nyeon-cho (a kind of fruit of cactus, you can use rasberry juice power - for red color).

1. Make a dough into a small ball and shape it like a bowl in the picture.
2. Fill the dough with fillings of sesame and supar (There are variations. Beans, mousse of bean, redbean, or sweet potate. Everything works.).
3. Close the opening and make it into half-moon shape.
3"- Usually that's all. But we use some of our creativity with colorful dough.
Aren't they Fantastic?

4. Lastly, steam them with pine needles. (Steaming on the pine needes. That's why we call this rice cake 'Songpyeon'. SONG means a pine tree in Chinese character. )
